Burial Site for Ancient Native Americans Located in Tennessee
Headquartered in Sevierville, Tennessee, The Smoky Mountain Relic Room collects historical artifacts and other items of historical importance, such as dinosaur fossils, minerals, and meteorites. The Smoky Mountain Relic Room has been in business for over 40 years and has accumulated the largest collection of historical artifacts in North America. The business sells artifacts from every era of the Earth‘s history and educates consumers through its Chasing History podcast and YouTube Channel, which covers topics such as excavating a Native American burial site.
In a recent video on Smoky Mountain Relic Room’s YouTube channel, owner Chase Pipes teams up with Jason Pentrail of Seven Ages Audio Journal to explore Pinson Mounds State Archaeological Park, a burial place for Native Americans that came from different periods. The video discusses different antiquities found at the location and explores the burial mounds estimated to be from the Archaic Period, the Woodland Period, and the Mississippian Period. These periods range from 1,000 to 8,000 years old.
Some materials the park has excavated include copper that originates from Canada, obsidian from the Rocky Mountains, and relics such as jewelry. While there is no evidence of habitation at the site, it seems to have been a spiritual destination meant for performing rituals and burials. One of the tombs excavated had eight females accompanied by pearl jewelry and other artifacts; other tombs with males were also discovered, in which excavators found objects such as a Mica mirror and a Schist pendant. While other tombs have been opened, two tombs have yet to be opened.
